Course description:
The course will provide a general survey of the theories and contemporary practices in the process of public and private Labor-Management Relations. In addition to traditional topics in the field of Labor-Management Relations., such as , labor history and labor law, unfair labor practices, bargaining agreements wage and salary issues, , employee befit issues, job security and seniority, and conflict resolution techniques and process , such as grievance procedures, mediation and arbitration., contemporary challenges and opportunities , such labor-management cooperation and employee teams will also be covered.

INTRODUCTION TO GRIEVANCE HANDLING: 5 sessions. Topics to include the duty of fair representation; right to information; Weingarten Rights and the tests of just cause; constructing remedies and writing up grievances. Bring your contract to class. Instructor: W. Puette, Ph.D.

Topics to include documentation and investigation; past practice and arbitral standards; mid-term bargaining; dealing with management; oral presentation at first steps hearing. COLLECTIVE BARGAINING LAW BASICS: 6 sessions. Topics include: overview of the State and National collective bargaining laws with a special look at EFCA and its effect on organizing, representation elections; negotiations, representation rights; strikes and picket lines.
